Teatro SEA’s 2016 – 2017 Internship Opportunities

The Society of the Educational Arts, Inc. (SEA), a Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Theatre Company for Young Audiences, is dedicated to the empowerment and educational advancement of children and young adults. SEA creates educational theater and arts programs specifically designed to examine, challenge and create possible solutions for current educational and social issues affecting our communities.

Arts Administration & Operations 

Interns will work closely with the Operations Manager and staff on projects such as:

  • administrative tasks surrounding educational arts and theater programs in NYC schools and at our home-base theater, Teatro SEA
  • marketing and community outreach for arts-in-education programs and events/programs for general audiences
  • assisting with the planning of special events for the community
  • assist CEO & Artistic Director to improve current social media visibility, attract new audience members and maintain social media pages to represent current programming (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
  • other administrative duties including database management, printing of performance tickets and programs, printing of Teacher Resource Guides, etc.

Schedule: Flexible. Anywhere from 8 – 20 hours per week, between the hours ofMonday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Theater Technical Assistant & Maintenance

Interns will have an opportunity to gain insight into the many aspects of the production process. Interns will assist SEA’s Technical Director with our Tour of Children’s Theater in NYC and performances at our home-base theater, Teatro SEA. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting with load-ins and load-outs of production set and equipment, traveling to NYC schools and other venues to assist Technical staff with performances, maintenance of theatrical technical equipment and SEA’s home-base theater facilities, among others. Interns will receive some training in theatrical lighting and sound.
Schedule: Monday – Friday or Tuesday – Saturday, 15 – 30 hours a week. Daily hours may vary (morning or afternoon) depending on our schedule of performances.
Start Date:  Sept. 2016

Theater Usher & Stagehand/Maintenance

Interns will assist the staff at general audience performances, which generally take place on Saturdays at 3pm (Sept. – June). VariousSunday afternoon and Friday evening performances are scheduled as well. Responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to: managing box office and concession stand, greet and usher guests to seats, update/gather mailing lists, prepare programs for audience members, assist technical staff with maintenance/cleanliness of theater and facilities, among other relative duties. Some office work/administrative duties may be necessary.

Schedule: Saturdays, 12pm – 5pm. Some Sunday afternoons and/or Fridayevenings.

Graphic Design

Graphic Design Interns will assist the Art Director in the marketing and promotion of our educational arts and theater programs as well as our community events and theater performance schedule for general audiences. Responsibilities are listed below, but may include additional tasks as needed. Interns will:

  • design new promotional materials for educational and community theater performances, art projects and special events (post cards, flyers, brochures, banners, etc.)
  • adapt current promotional materials with relevant information
  • revamp and upgrade design of educational materials
  • perform other duties as assigned, including the printing of programs and educational materials for performances, supporting staff in social media efforts, etc.

Must be knowledgeable in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Knowledge in WordPress and the ability to read and write in Spanish is a plus, but not required.

Schedule: 6 – 20 hours a week, Monday – Friday. Flexible.
Start Date:  ASAP

Development Assistant (Grant Writing/Fundraising)

Interns will support the Operations Manager and Managing Director with current fundraising and grant writing efforts and identify prospective grants to which we may submit applications seeking support of our arts, cultural and educational programs. Interns will be responsible for supporting the staff in submitting proposals by gathering information/data and updating key files for current funding opportunities/grants, oversee grants calendar and deadlines, research, identify and pursue additional prospective grants, foundations and other avenues through which we may seek funding, assist staff in the organization of cultivation/fundraising events, update and maintain information of individual donors, schedule and/or attend meetings with current funders and/or potential funders and provide general administrative support for senior staff surrounding development, etc.
Schedule: Flexible. Anywhere from 8 – 25 hours per week, between the hours ofMonday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.
Start Date: ASAP

QUALIFICATIONS

All interns should be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel. We are looking for interns who are motivated, flexible, committed, and have an interest in the arts, arts administration and/or the non-profit industry. A positive, enthusiastic attitude is a must. Spanish-speaking is a plus, but not mandatory.

SCHEDULE

Interns will create their schedule with SEA’s Operations Manager and/or Technical Director.

Teatro SEA will work with you to complete paper work for school credit, is so desired. This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in a fast-paced, non-profit arts-in-education organization serving children, youth and families throughout New York City.

All internships are unpaid.
