New York, NY – Teatro SEA, the nation’s premier Latino children’s theater under the leadership of Artistic Director Dr. Manuel A. Morán, proudly announces The Journey of Pura Belpré’s Tales, a new bilingual production celebrating the legacy of the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City.
Performing Saturdays at 3:00 PM from May 10 through June 7, 2025, this vibrant and interactive family show brings to life the beloved folktales championed by Pura Belpré, through a dynamic blend of puppetry, live music, and storytelling. Children and families will be enchanted by timeless characters such as Pérez & Martina, Juan Bobo, and The Three Magi, as they embark on a magical journey through the rich traditions of Puerto Rican and Latin American folklore.
Recommended for ages 5 and up, The Journey of Pura Belpré’s Tales honors the enduring power of stories to preserve cultural identity and inspire new generations. Performed in both Spanish and English, the production invites audiences of all backgrounds to celebrate the beauty and strength of Puerto Rican heritage.
“At Teatro SEA, we are proud to bring Latino icons, heroes, and heroines to the stage. Pura Belpré is one of them — the first Puerto Rican librarian in the United States, the first Puerto Rican author to publish bilingual children’s books, and a talented puppeteer. Although we have been presenting a smaller production called The Pura Belpré Project for many years in classrooms and libraries, this new show is a full mainstage version, featuring new puppets, a brand-new set, and expanded storytelling. The Journey of Pura Belpré’s Tales had its successful world premiere at FESTITIM, the International Puppet Theater Festival in Cuba, and we are thrilled to now present the New York premiere of this beautiful and reimagined production,” said Dr. Manuel A. Morán, Founder and Artistic Director of Teatro SEA.
Performances will take place at Punto SEA, Teatro SEA’s intimate performance space at The Clemente (107 Suffolk Street, NYC).

Morán, anuncia con orgullo El viaje de los cuentos de Pura Belpré, una nueva producción bilingüe que celebra el legado de la primera bibliotecaria puertorriqueña en la ciudad de Nueva York.
Con funciones los sábados a las 3:00 PM, del 10 de mayo al 7 de junio de 2025, este evocador e interactivo espectáculo familiar da vida a los queridos cuentos populares que Pura Belpré promovió, a través de una dinámica mezcla de títeres, música en vivo y narración de cuentos. Niños y familias se dejarán encantar por personajes atemporales como Pérez y Martina, Juan Bobo y Los Tres Reyes Magos, mientras emprenden un viaje mágico por las ricas tradiciones del folclore puertorriqueño y latinoamericano.
Recomendado para mayores de 5 años, El viaje de los cuentos de Pura Belpré rinde homenaje al poder duradero de las historias para preservar la identidad cultural e inspirar a nuevas generaciones. Presentada en español e inglés, esta producción invita a públicos de todos los orígenes a celebrar la belleza y fortaleza del patrimonio puertorriqueño.
“En Teatro SEA, estamos orgullosos de llevar al escenario a íconos, héroes y heroínas latinas. Pura Belpré es una de ellas: la primera bibliotecaria puertorriqueña en Estados Unidos, la primera autora puertorriqueña en publicar libros infantiles bilingües, y una talentosa titiritera. Aunque durante muchos años hemos presentado una versión más pequeña llamada The Pura Belpré Project en aulas y bibliotecas, este nuevo espectáculo es una versión completa para nuestro escenario principal, con nuevos títeres, un escenario completamente renovado y una narración ampliada. El Viaje de los Cuentos de Pura Belpré tuvo su exitoso estreno mundial en FESTITIM, el Festival Internacional de Teatro de Títeres en Cuba, y ahora estamos emocionados de presentar su estreno en Nueva York con esta hermosa y renovada producción”, comentó el Dr. Manuel A. Morán, fundador y director artístico de Teatro SEA.
