New York City, January 2024 – Teatro SEA, a cornerstone resident theater organization at The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center, regrets to announce the temporary interruption of its Winter and Spring Season 2024. This decision is a result of the commencement of a historic $13 million accessibility project at The Clemente, where Teatro SEA is housed, aimed at making the cultural center fully ADA compliant.
The renovation project, launched on January 6, 2024, during Teatro SEA’s 23rd Annual Three Kings Day Festival, marks a significant moment for The Clemente as it undergoes a transformative upgrade. The project, generously funded by the City of New York, includes the installation of a new elevator in the five-story building, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms in the main theaters, upgraded restrooms and hallways. Additionally, the lobby will undergo a complete renovation.
Isabel DeJesus, Board Chair of SEA states “Teatro SEA and The Clemente are inextricably linked, and we are excited for the building we call our home to get some long overdue upgrades. However, this is a difficult transition period full of unknowns for Teatro SEA.”
Dr. Manuel Morán, Founder of Teatro SEA, states, “While the news of the impending renovation brings a mix of emotions, including a tinge of bitterness due to the necessary interruption of planned premieres and events, there is also a sense of excitement for the enhanced accessibility and facilities that will benefit audiences tremendously.” He emphasized the significance of the renovation for inclusivity and accessibility, especially for family and child audiences. “We believe in fostering an environment where the joy of the arts is accessible to everyone, and this renovation is a crucial step toward realizing that vision,” he stated.
During this temporary closure of Teatro SEA’s main theater, Punto SEA, the cabaret space, will be fully programmed to offer engaging performances for both kids and adult audiences. Teatro SEA invites patrons to join them at Punto SEA as they continue to provide a platform for cultural engagement and entertainment during this interim period. Additionally, we are in contact with other theaters and venues throughout the city, and a traveling Season is being planned while the renovation is underway.

Nueva York, enero de 2024 – Teatro SEA, organización teatral residente fundamental en el Centro Cultural y Educativo Clemente Soto Vélez, lamenta anunciar la interrupción temporal de su Temporada de Invierno y Primavera 2024. Esta decisión es resultado del inicio de un proyecto histórico de accesibilidad de $13 millones en el Clemente, con el objetivo de hacer que el centro cultural sea completamente compatible con la Ley de Estadounidenses con Discapacidades (ADA).
El proyecto de renovación, lanzado el 6 de enero de 2024, durante el 23 Festival Anual del Día de los Tres Reyes de Teatro SEA, marca un momento significativo para el Clemente mientras se somete a una mejora transformadora. El proyecto, generosamente financiado por la Ciudad de Nueva York, incluye la instalación de un ascensor, mejoras en los baños, así como su accesibilidad en ellos para sillas de ruedas en los teatros principales y pasillos. Además, el vestíbulo se someterá a una renovación completa.

Sin embargo, este es un período de transición difícil lleno de incertidumbres para nosotros en Teatro SEA.”
